چکیده

We present a new model for the formation of black holes in cosmological simulations, motivated by the first star formation. Black holes form from high density peaks of primordial gas, and grow via both gas accretion and mergers. Massive black holes heat the surrounding material, suppressing star formation at the centres of galaxies, and driving galactic winds. We perform an investigation into the physical effects of the model parameters, and obtain a ‘best’ set of these parameters by comparing the outcome of simulations to observations. With this best set, we successfully reproduce the cosmic star formation rate history, black hole mass – velocity dispersion relation, and the size – velocity dispersion relation of galaxies. The black hole seed mass is ∼ 10M , which is orders of magnitude smaller than has been used in previous cosmological simulations with active galactic nuclei, but suggests that the origin of the seed black holes is the death of Population iii stars.

A unified model for AGN feedback in cosmological simulations of structure formation

We discuss a numerical model for black hole growth and its associated feedback processes that for the first time allows cosmological simulations of structure formation to simultaneously follow the build up of the cosmic population of galaxies and active galactic nuclei. Our model assumes that seed black holes are present at early cosmic epochs at the centres of forming halos. We then track thei...

Recipes for Baking Black Forest Databases - Building and Querying Black Hole Merger Trees from Cosmological Simulations

Large-scale N-body simulations play an important role in advancing our understanding of the formation and evolution of large structures in the universe. These computations require a large number of particles, in the order of 10-100 of billions, to realistically model phenomena such as the formation of galaxies. Among these particles, black holes play a dominant role on the formation of these st...

Possible Effects of a Cosmological Constant on Black Hole Evolution

We explore possible effects of vacuum energy on the evolution of black holes. If the universe contains a cosmological constant, and if black holes can absorb energy from the vacuum, then black hole evaporation could be greatly suppressed. For the magnitude of the cosmological constant suggested by current observations, black holes larger than ∼ 4× 10 g would accrete energy rather than evaporate...

Spin, Accretion and the Cosmological Growth of Supermassive Black Holes

If supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are the energy sources that power quasars and active galactic nuclei, then QSO SDSS 1148+5251, the quasar with the highest redshift (zQSO = 6.43), hosts a supermassive black hole formed within ∼ 0.9 Gyr after the Big Bang. This requirement places constraints on the cosmological formation of SMBHs, believed to grow from smaller initial seeds by a combination o...

Dynamics of thick discs around Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes

We consider the effects of a cosmological constant on the dynamics of constant angular momentum discs orbiting Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes. The motivation behind this study is to investigate whether the presence of a radial force contrasting the black hole’s gravitational attraction can influence the occurrence of the runaway instability, a robust feature of the dynamics of constant ang...
